A passion for bespoke upholstery

How it Works

You can have such fun re-designing your chair.  Be it that you want it to fit in with a new sofa or perhaps you’d like the chair to do the talking in a room...  I’m happy to visit your home to see what surroundings your chair needs to fit into.  I’ll also firm up a quote at this time.  With me, I’ll bring my 1000’s of fabric swatches for you to view in your surroundings.  If you’d like me to design an ‘Eclectic Chair’, i’ll ask you to choose a favourite swatch or two so that I can bounce off this design for the remainder of your chair – then leave the rest to me...

There’s no pressure in this process.  Some people know as soon as they see a swatch.  Other people might need to mull over designs and fabrics.  When I visit you, it might be that I decide to go away and order some other styles that I think will be more in-keeping with your home.  I’m not in a rush to start work, I have a lead time which is currently 8 weeks.

Choosing Fabric

I ask you to provide me the cost of the fabric upfront so that I might place your fabric order and get it sent to me ready for checking and re-measuring.  Your fabric then acts as your deposit for the commission.  I then come and collect your chair and start work.

Once your chair is finished, I’ll deliver back to you and my labour settled.

I try and provide a service akin to the sort of service I would like myself.

I pride myself on my communication skills and will often update customers on the progress of works.

I just wish chairs could talk and could share with us their history...

An idea of price for a single chair including collection and delivery £375 - £450 (depending on how structurally sound your chair is).

Fabric is on top and varies in price from £20 - £120 per metre.

Before & After

Late Victorian Elbow Chair

This chair was brought by client at a car boot sale and needed extensive woodwork repair and cleaning before finishing in a dark wax.

The original upholstery was utilised so as to save on cost but calico was added to help form a better shape and to protect.

I recovered using the client’s own fabric (which was once a curtain).

Laura Ashley Armchair

Interior Designer, Sarah Jane based in Woodbridge designed this chair.

Named as The Duchess.  Sarah designed an eclectic mix and was daring enough to use lime green combined with soft pink piping to help frame.

Where cotton mix (non fire retardant) fabric was used, a calibar base cloth was utilised prior to top fabric fix.

Welsh Bobbin Corner Chair

Original chair was black with dirt and grime so I began by getting all the woodwork cleaned and waxed.

Frame repaired as arms were loose.  Soft wood across seat was removed and a seat built using traditional upholstery methods including webbing, hessian, two stuffings, hard-edge roll to shape and calico to reinforce shape.  Finished with Linwood Velvet and close stud nails to maintain authenticity.

Edwardian Elbow Throne Chair

This was a chair which I held in storage - I have many !

My client required a statement chair for her hallway so I ripped this down to it's bare wood frame and rebuilt using traditional methods.

Finished to pin-cushion.

Victorian Balloon Back Chair

This chair’s gorgeous lines were reinforced with calico and the inside back’s buttons re-sited with additional stuffing.

Inside arms buttons were filled and seat reinforced and recovered with calico prior to Matthew Williamson top cover.

Finished with Houles double piping to compliment deep-buttoning (bespoke in-house buttons)
